  • Quick Answer: Matthew Rhys became the first actor in Emmy history to win Lead Actor awards across Comedy, Drama, and Limited Series after his historic 78th Primetime Emmy victories.

Matthew Rhys has made Emmy history with his victory in Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance in Widow's Bay.

The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony was held last night, with shows such as Widow's Bay, The Pitt, Pluribus, and DTF St. Louis taking home major trophies. Rhys was also one of the biggest winners of the night, as he took home multiple trophies and has now done something no actor has ever done in Emmy history.

Matthew Rhys is now officially the first-ever actor in Emmy history to win in all three lead actor categories: comedy, drama, and limited series. It's an achievement no performer, male or female, has ever done before last night.

The Welsh actor achieved the record by winning Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance in Widow's Bay, helping him earn the very rare trifecta.

Before he made history, earlier in the ceremony, he also won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series for his work in the Netflix series The Beast in Me, which was seen as a surprise victory by pundits.

Rhys previously won an Emmy in 2018 for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his work in the final season of The Americans. Not only that, but he also took home his fourth trophy last night for Outstanding Comedy Series, since he is one of the executive producers of Widow's Bay.

Given that he took home two acting trophies, he was also the third performer to win two acting Emmy awards in the same ceremony (James Earl Jones and Stockard Channing previously achieved it), but he is the first one for two lead acting categories.

This is an exceptional achievement for Rhys, who has long been admired in the last several years since his career took off on television starting in Brothers & Sisters, and now he is part of the history books. It would be interesting to see whether someone will follow in his footsteps in the next few years.

Widow's Bay takes place in a quaint island town 40 miles off the coast of New England, where something lurks beneath the surface. Mayor Tom Loftis (played by Rhys) is desperate to revive his struggling community.

The cast includes Rhys, Kate O’Flynn, Stephen Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll, and Dale Dickey. The supporting cast includes K Callan and Jeff Hiller.

The series has already been renewed for a second season. It quickly rose to Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and has earned praise as “the year’s best new show,” “the show of the summer,” and “one of the brightest surprises on streaming right now.”

Showrunner Katie Dippold teased, "Season two is about how everything is great on the island, and there’s nothing to worry about."
