Following the backlash that the long-running sci-fi show faced, former Doctor Who, Matt Smith, doesn't understand their hate on the franchise at all.
Considering that he is quite fond of the series, here's what Smith has to say about the series.
Former Time Lord Actor Matt Smith Defends Doctor Who From Backlash
After continuing the Doctor Who tradition of taking the torch from David Tennant's Tenth Doctor, House of the Dragon Matt Smith knew that playing the Time Lord was a once-in-a-blue-moon opportunity.
"It was overnight," Smith explained on the impact of the sci-fi series on his career, "Nobody knew who I was and suddenly I was f***ing Doctor Who!"
In fact, Smith called the role an "amazing responsibility" since Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor is the latest version is "in people's homes at Christmas" showcasing special holiday episodes for his debut.
Apart from calling Ncuti's "brilliant" performance, Smith doesn't shy away from bringing up the backlash Doctor Who faced since Jodie Whittaker's female and Gatwa's Black and LGBTQ+ Doctor roles.
"Those debates reduce it to a place that it doesn't need to be in," Smith shared, "People that attack Doctor Who blow my mind. It's about an alien who is cool and travels around the universe saving civilizations — what's not to love?"
His House of the Dragon role as Daemon Targaryen has lived up to his name since his performances as the Doctor and The Crown's Prince Philip, so it's only natural that he feels strongly in the sci-fi show's progression over the years.
While he hasn't watched the newest Doctor Who episodes much, he knows that Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor did an amazing job picking up the new take and iteration on the time traveler driving the TARDIS.
"I feel very proud to have been in the show," Smith added, "It changed my life because few shows are watched by a nine-year-old, mum and dad and 83-year-old grandma. That's three generations."
