Sony reportedly has restrictions on the Spider-Man villains that Marvel Studios can use for the MCU movies.
Since 2016, Spider-Man has been a recurring player in the MCU thanks to the groundbreaking Disney-Sony deal. At the same time, Sony also has its own franchise that focuses on spinoff films of the web-slinger's villains.
For years, there have been questions from fans whether there will be a major crossover between the two franchises at some point as they would love to see the Sony characters become actual antagonists of Spider-Man on screen.
Sony Reportedly Imposed Restriction on Spider-Man Villains That Marvel Studios Can Use
According to insider Daniel Richtman, Marvel Studios is not allowed to use any of the Spider-Man villains that were depicted in the Sony franchise.
In other words, we won't be able to see Tom Holland's Spider-Man face-off characters such as Venom, Kraven the Hunter, Morbius, Madame Web, Rhino, and such anytime soon.
Because of this restriction, as Richtman described, "there aren't many left for MCU Spider-Man to face off against."
So far, Marvel Studios and Sony have not confirmed the claims that were made by Richtman in his scoop.
This alleged information might be disappointing for many fans since it would mean that there will be iconic villains that Spider-Man will not face in the MCU and it explains the choices that Marvel made regarding the antagonists throughout the character's run.
While you can argue that characters such as Green Goblin and Doc Ock were used in No Way Home, it should also be noted that the film was made in collaboration with Sony and they were versions from the past movies which is not part of the alleged restriction.
For now, let's hope that we will finally get some updates on Spider-Man 4 as fans are patiently waiting to see Tom Holland's next adventure in the MCU and more of the Sony-Marvel/Disney collaboration.
