Perhaps one of the most shocking things that happened in Man of Steel was Kal-El's decision to snap General Zod's neck although Superman is known for being against killing his enemies. However, Michael Shannon insists there was a good reason for the action.
In Man of Steel, Zod and Superman were in an all-out brawl that destroyed just about everything in their path. Once the two end up in a museum, Zod sets his eyes on a family and aims his laser vision at them. Needless to say, Kal is forced to kill Zod in order to save the family.
So were Superman's action's justified? Shannon recently spoke to Cinemablend about the film's controversial ending and he stated that it was the only way to deal with Zod.
"No, I didn't think there was any other way to end, it, really," Shannon said. "I mean, Zod says it's either me or you. I'm not gonna let you survive. I will kill you unless you kill me. And that seemed sufficiently Greek to me, you know?"
Well, that's one way to put it. On the other hand, director Zack Snyder had a different reason for choosing to make Superman kill Zod. Interestingly, the filmmaker admitted that he wanted to show that there are major consequences in his movies.
Honestly, Zod was an excellent character who should have survived and played a major role in more DC Extended Universe films (no, the corpse in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice does not count). Nevertheless, it also made sense that he had to be killed considering that he was truly an unstoppable force to reckon with.
