More details from the upcoming Magic: The Gathering Netflix animated series have been revealed. Although Wizards of the Coast and Netflix haven't revealed any story details from the upcoming fantasy series, one thing is for sure: it will be character-driven.
Last week, Netflix announced that Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo are producing an animated series based on Magic: The Gathering, but they're not the only big names attached to the show. Henry Gilroy, co-producer of Star Wars:Rebels and developer of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, will serve as lead writer and co-executive producer. Jose Molina (Agent Carter, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) will also be part of the Netflix MTG series. Yoriaki Mochizuki (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Lego Movie) will serve as co-executive producer and acting supervisor director of the MTG series.
MTG team director Jeremy Jarvis recently talked to Polygon about the direction of the MTG Netflix series, and he confirmed that the series will be character-driven.
"We are moving into that character-driven franchise space," Jarvis told Polygon. "This is not going to be Yu-Gi-Oh! or Pokemon where you're literalizing gameplay aspects. We developed this library of wonderful characters and wonderful places and impactful events, and we're going to be bringing that to life in a new way."
According to Jarvis, fans of the Netflix series, The Dragon Prince, will enjoy the new MTG animated series.
Netflix hasn't set a release date for the MTG animated series yet but given the epic scale of the game's story, it probably will take more than a year or two before it hits the streaming service.
