Madame Web star Emma Roberts recently weighed in on the movie's box office failure and how the memes may have contributed to its performance.
The Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU) movie notably became a major box office and critical flop when it was released earlier this year, and it was already considered to be one of the worst comic book movies of all time.
It was also the subject of ridicule online as fans created memes and jokes that poked fun at the film and an infamous line from the trailer became a punchline due to Dakota Johnson's deadpan delivery.
Emma Roberts Believes the Internet Memes Led to Madame Web's Box Office Failure
In a recent interview, Roberts weighed in on the disappointing box office performance of Madame Web.
She blamed the internet memes for the movie's abysmal reception and believed that the reaction might have been different if it wasn't a subject of ridicule.
"I’m not intimidated by failure, and I’m not intimidated by people having negative thoughts about something. I personally really loved Madame Web. I really enjoyed the movie. I thought everyone in it was great. The director, S.J. Clarkson, I think did an amazing job. She’s the reason I wanted to do that movie," the actress said.
"If it wasn’t for internet culture and everything being made into a joke, I think that the reception would’ve been different. And that’s what bums me out about a lot of stuff, even stuff that I’ve done, is people just make such a joke out of everything now."
The actress made a valid point regarding the internet memes' effects on the film since it was already a subject of ridicule before it was released in theaters which made it a disadvantage in terms of public perception.
However, the film also received negative reactions from both critics and the audience and it affected the word-of-mouth in its release as it discouraged more people from watching it in theaters.
There are a lot of factors that you can consider for Madame Web's box office failure, but in the end, the film's quality was simply not received well. Even if you count out the memes, you can argue that the financial performance might have remained the same.
