Nintendo has recently released a first look at the live-action versions of Link and Zelda from its upcoming Legend of Zelda movie.

Portrayed by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bo Bragason, the princess of Hyrule and the green-clad swordsman have once again transported fans to the medieval, Western Europe–inspired fantasy world that began with the franchise’s first game in 1986.

As the film aims to evoke nostalgia while offering a new kind of big-screen adventure, here’s a breakdown of the differences between the game and movie versions of Link and Zelda.

Link

At first glance, The Legend of Zelda movie has been faithful to its source material, maintaining Link’s traditional look.

With his shaggy, down-swept hair past his pointy ears and striking blue eyes, it’s hard to deny that the Hylian’s physical appearance is highly accurate.

However, unlike the blue tunic he wore in Breath of the Wild, his live-action version sports a classic green tunic, echoing his look from earlier games, such as 2006's Twilight Princess.

This is further emphasized by the brown strap across his chest, which carries his sword and shield, though these weapons aren’t visible in the initial photos.

His iconic green, pointy hat is also missing, though it’s expected to appear at some point in the movie. He’s likewise missing the white underclothing seen in some game versions.

From the looks of it, the film is taking a more realistic approach, toning down certain features from the games, such as his pantless style, to better suit a live-action audience.

So, while his in-game appearance has evolved over time, the live-action Link still retains the same core features that fans recognize and love.

Zelda

Like Link, Princess Zelda’s video game look has changed over time, though she’s often recognized for wearing shades of pink. However, this differs greatly from her appearance in The Legend of Zelda movie.

While her physical traits remain faithful to the games, long blonde hair, blue eyes, and pointy ears, she isn’t wearing a tiara or crown, nor is she clad in armor. Instead, she carries a traditional bow and arrow, which have often been her weapons of choice in the games.

She’s dressed in a long blue dress or tunic, brown gauntlets, dark pants, and boots, a look seemingly inspired by Breath of the Wild’s design.

Additionally, she wears a necklace, though it doesn’t resemble any of the game's items or typical Hylian accessories.

With a bow and a quiver slung over her back, the movie may portray her in a more active, warrior-like role. Her detailed accessories, such as distinctive earrings, add subtle depth and authenticity to her character.

By opting for a practical outfit rather than elaborate dresses, the film aligns Zelda with her modern portrayals – though there may still be a chance that she will be seen in pink.

The live-action The Legend of Zelda is slated to release on May 7, 2027.
