Hollywood is all about sequels and prequels, but why do some movies get split into parts in a single release? Take for instance Netflix's newest satirical disaster film which follows the same format. So, how many parts does Leave the World Behind have?

Based on Rumaan Alam's novel of the same name, Leave the World Behind tells the story of two families joining together under a strange world crisis of a surprise cyber attack.

While disaster films are meant to be longer than one hour, Leave the World Behind was split into five parts, namely: Part I: The House, Part II: The Curve, Part III: The Noise, Part IV: The Flood, and lastly, Part V: The End.

Each of them indicates what part of the story the film is playing. In this case, it's the parts of the cyber attack, aka the House, where it all began, followed by the curve of the internet and cables, the noise incident, and the flood (the flamingos and the deers, the red pamphlets), and of course, the end of the movie.

Why Leave the World Behind is Split Into Parts Explained

Although Leave the World Behind's film director Sam Esmail didn't explain the reason behind splitting the movie into five parts, he did share with Entertainment Weekly some of the creative changes he made to the original novel.

"[The film] became a different interpretation of what Rumaan wrote," Esmail explained, "I'm not a fan of making a carbon copy of the book."

Esmail added that he wanted to see Leave the World Behind as a "standalone piece" so that either source material wouldn't spoil the other's stories.

In a way, these two are "different interpretations of the same story."

Will Netflix Make a Leave the World Behind Sequel?

As of writing, Netflix and Sam Esmail have yet to announce whether Leave the World Behind will get a sequel or not.

However, considering that the film already covered Rumaan Alam's story on the screen, viewers will likely have to stick with the 'mystifying' ending we got.

Meanwhile, the official synopsis for Netflix's Leave the World Behind follows Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke's family on vacation turning into a whirlwind of a twist.

Their family vacation only gets worse the moment two strangers, Mahershala Ali and Myha'la, arrive at their doorstep, claiming they, too, live in the same house they were staying at.

Leave the World Behind is available to stream on Netflix.
