Keri Russell: The Script for Star Wars Episode IX Made Her Cry

The Star Wars sequel trilogy is set to end with The Rise of Skywalker, but until now, Lucasfilm is keeping a very tight lid on the plot of the film. Now and then, we get some interesting tidbits here and there, and franchise newcomer Keri Russell talks a bit about how she felt when she was approached for a role.

Talking to the Associated Press, Russell explained, "When I read his script that he wrote I cried…I mean who knows what it will turn out to be and I hope it remains true to what he originally wanted."

In the movie, Russell is going to be playing new character Zorri Bliss, who looks to be some kind of female Boba Fett/scoundrel type. It's possible that she could be an entirely new character with an independent purpose in the movie, but some speculate that she is the actual mother of Rey.

Though I'm satisfied with the explanation that Rey's parents were no one, I suspect that Lucasfilm may just want to scratch that itch for the fans who want a face to the characters. Maybe Rey does end up meeting her mother, but I don't want it to go the way she thinks. What if it ends up like Shazam! where Rey meets her mom, and it turns out that it didn't ‘complete' her the way she thought it would.

At least that's what I want. After The Force Awakens, I was pleased that The Last Jedi gave us so many unexpected twists and turns. Hopefully Abrams follows suit with this final chapter of the Skywalker saga. Russel did have this to say about Abrams coming back onboard: "He's not trying to change [Star Wars] to be something else… He really respects what it is."

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker comes out Dec. 20.
