Karla Sofia Gascon Releases New Statement After Being Sidelined from Emilia Perez's Oscar Campaign
In her recent post on Instagram, Gascon released a new statement regarding her online controversy once again where she called out "cancel culture."
This comes as reports revealed that she's been sidelined by Netflix from Emilia Perez's Oscar campaign, which experienced a setback as a result of the controversy.
"Been on a rollercoaster of emotions these past few days. I've been transparent because I have nothing to hide. During this time, I felt lost in my transition, seeking approval in the eyes of others. But today, I finally know who I am," the Oscar nominee wrote.
"I only seek the freedom to exist without fear, to create art without barriers, and to move forward with my new life. They want me to apply the 'cancel culture.' I ask the experts in Hollywood, the journalists who know me and have followed my path, how to move forward?"
Gascon ended her post by tagging the accounts of several Hollywood media outlets.
Karla Sofia Gascon to Skip Attending Awards Events
It was recently reported that Gascon is no longer attending all awards events in Los Angeles that she set to participate in this week including the Critics' Choice Awards where she is nominated for Best Actress.
Netflix has also distanced itself from Gascon as a result of the controversy and they are only communicating with the actress through her agent. They are also "no longer covering expenses for her travel to the various awards shows or her styling for any appearances at these events."
If Gascon intends to attend any of the awards events throughout the season, she has to shoulder all expenses including transportation and accommodation.
Fans have also noticed that Gascon has been removed from the online FYC campaign materials for Emilia Perez.
The film's awards campaign has shifted its main focus to Zoe Saldaña, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress, in their attempt to salvage their chances to win any of the awards including the coveted Best Picture prize.
It remains to be seen whether Gascon's controversy will impact the film's overall campaign for the rest of the season, but insiders have suggested that members of The Academy they've spoken to have shown reluctance in voting for the film.
