Emilia Perez star Karla Sofia Gascon is now set to skip all awards events she was originally set to attend this week following her online controversy.
The Oscar Best Actress nominee was embroiled in a controversy recently following her resurfaced past tweets that are deemed to be racist and Islamaphobic. She even called the 2021 Oscars ceremony an "Afro-Korean festival."
Since then, Gascon has deleted her tweets and deactivated her X account. She issued an apology and defended that she is "neither racist nor anything that all these people have tried to make others believe I am."
Karla Sofia Gascon is No Longer Attending Awards Events in Los Angeles This Week
A new report revealed that Gascon is no longer attending any of the awards events in Los Angeles that she was set to participate this week.
The Emilia Perez star was set to attend the AFI Awards luncheon this February 6, Thursday with her co-stars and director Jacques Audiard. The event is usually a hotspot for awards campaigning.
Despite being nominated for Best Actress at the Critics' Choice Awards, she is also not expected to be present at the ceremony this Friday, February 7.
Gascon was also supposed to be a presenter at the Producers Guild of America (PGA) Awards this Saturday, February 8 Awards as the representative of Emilia Perez.
She was set to be one of the recipients of the Virtuoso Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival this Sunday, February 9, but she is no longer going to attend the event as well and it is unknown yet whether she will still be awarded.
It was suggested in the report that other stars indicated that they were considering canceling their participation in the events if Gascon did not cancel out of concern that things could get uncomfortable.
What is the Future of Karla Sofia Gascon's Oscar Campaign?
It is unknown yet whether Gascon's controversy will affect her attendance in any future awards ceremonies and events in the coming weeks.
The report revealed that tensions are rising between Gascon and Netflix as a result of the controversy and "there is no great interest on the part of Netflix to provide the usual courtesies afforded by a studio to an Oscar contender, such as transportation and accommodations, to facilitate her attendance at the remaining award season gatherings."
Gascon has also been removed from the online campaign materials of Emilia Perez as Netflix pivoted its focus to other stars such as Zoe Saldaña as the center of the promotion and not just feature Gascon exclusively.
Awards pundits have opined that Gascon's chances to win the Oscar might be zero at this point as a result of controversy. It remains to be seen whether it will also affect the film's chances in other categories including the coveted Best Picture prize.
