Professional ice hockey team Seattle Kraken has revealed a new rare blue Magic: The Gathering snow creature from the upcoming Norse mythology-set, Kaldheim, and it's called Icebreaker Kraken. The twelve-to-cast 8/8 creature is easier to cast if you have a good amount of snow lands in the battlefield, and when Icebreaker Kraken enters the battlfield, it "freezes" target opponent's artifacts and creatures (They don't untap during their controller's next untap step).
If you want to trigger its enter-the-battlefield effect again, you can return Icebreaker Kraken to your hand by returning three snow lands you control to their owner's hand.
The art illustrated by Chris Cold looks chillingly dark, and it reminds me of the original Dark Depths art by Mathias Kollros.
Icebreaker Kraken looks like a powerful bomb in Limited formats, but the blue rare creature probably won't see competitive Standard constructed play. Being able to "freeze" your opponent's artifacts and creatures while providing an 8/8 body on the field can open the way for your other creatures to attack, and the ability to bring it back to your hand can help rescue itself from removal.
Kaldheim is set to release on February 5, 2021 for tabletop, and Jan. 28 on Magic Arena and Magic Online. The set will be followed by Strixhaven: School of Mages, which is set to release sometime in Spring 2021.
