Jon Watts recently opened up about his decision to not return to direct the highly-anticipated Marvel/Sony's Spider-Man 4.

After helming the "Home" trilogy of Spider-Man films in the MCU, the filmmaker opted not to return for the next installment to focus on other projects such as the upcoming series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.

Marvel Studios and Sony are still looking for a new filmmaker who will take over the project as the development continues and fans are anticipating the details on what they can expect for Spider-Man's next rodeo in the MCU.

In a recent interview, Watts explained why he decided to not return to helm Spider-Man 4 after working on the first three films.

He shared that the massive success of No Way Home made him realize that he won't be able to recapture the same magic again.

"That was such a specific moment in time, and the reaction to that movie was just so unbelievable. It’s never going to be like this, ever again," the director recalled.

Watts also opened up about the challenges of directing a Marvel movie as he wasn't able to fully control the process unlike his upcoming film Wolfs where he has complete involvement.

"Sometimes you do an action movie, and all the fun action stuff is given to the second-unit director," he said.

"On the Marvel movies, you split up the work because there’s so much to be done. Rarely do you get the Christopher Nolan opportunity to do all of it. On this one, I was like, ‘I want to shoot every single shot.’"

The filmmaker added, "This was the chance for me to go back to my voice and my vision and my style. Wolfs is mine, and that’s a really good feeling."

Based on Watts' words, it sounded like he just wanted to move on from the Marvel system and pursue his own projects where he could create original material and have full control of the process.

It is an understandable explanation since Watts has artistic ambitions and it would be difficult for him to achieve the goals if he stayed with Marvel for a longer time.

After all, he already had a great contribution to the franchise as all of his films are beloved by many fans. He has also set up a path for what the next filmmaker could do when they helm Spider-Man 4.
