Joker might have been accompanied by major controversy during its release, however, it looks Todd Phillips' gritty character study of Gotham's Clown Prince of Crime is doing exceptionally well at the box office, so much so that the film could probably bring in a profit just as large as Avengers: Infinity War.
Deadline has the most recent update on Joker's box office tracking, and according to the entertainment news outlet, the film is expected to bring in another $464 million or more in profits, allowing the movie to gather around $900 million or more at the end of its theatrical release.
Right now the film has managed to rake in $745 million at the global box office. That number is expected to rise by the end of the weekend, reaching $825 million or so. Give it another two weekends or three, and Joker may reach close to (or hopefully reach) a billion.
These numbers are pretty great for a small-budget comic book movie. Sure, a billion might not be close to Avengers: Infinity War's overall global haul which reached $2 billion, however, the first film in Joe and Anthony Russo's two-part Avengers movie cost around $50 million to develop. That means that the film could have profited only up to $1.5 billion in terms of ticket sales. We're not even really taking into account the cost of marketing.
Joker, on the other hand, costs only $60-$70 million to produce. Warner Brothers didn't even have to market the film as much because the film got so embroiled in controversy, it was impossible not to know about the Joaquin Phoenix-led movie.
