An iconic scene from the trailer of Joker: Folie à Deux was removed from the final cut of the movie, and fans are not happy about it.
The highly-anticipated sequel, which finally arrived in theaters this week, brought back Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix in the role of Arthur Fleck, as he wreaks romantic musical mayhem with Lady Gaga's Lee Quinzel.
However, unlike the first film, the critical reception has been mostly negative, with fans calling it a disappointing sequel. To make matters worse, the film is also projected to have an underwhelming box office run in its opening weekend.
Fans Are Not Happy with Joker: Folie à Deux for Removing this Iconic Scene
One of the moments in the trailer of Joker: Folie à Deux that got a lot of fans excited is the scene where Arthur Fleck and Lee Quinzel dance down a flight of stairs, an homage to the iconic staircase scene from the first Joker film.
The scene was even used as the main design for Folie à Deux's IMAX poster, which led fans to believe it would be a pivotal plot moment that fans should look out for.
However, to fans' disappointment, the staircase scene was not in the final cut of Joker: Folie à Deux. It is unclear yet why it was removed despite being prominently featured in promotional materials.
The film still features a scene set on that staircase, but it's not the same moment we saw in the trailer.
After watching the movie, fans took to social media to share their disappointment and even anger at the scene being cut.
While it would not necessarily improve the overall quality of the film, they argued that it would have been a "money shot" that audiences remember.
Here are some of the posts from fans on X:
Director Todd Phillips has not commented on the scene's removal from the final cut, but perhaps he felt that it didn't work out in the overall pacing of the film.
While we don't have the context of the scene, it would have been an effervescent and energizing moment in a film whose overall tone is persistently bleak and dull, even during musical numbers.
Joker: Folie à Deux is showing in theaters everywhere.
