Following his controversial legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard, the Oscar-nominated actor has been looking for his Hollywood comeback. He has been starring in a couple of independent productions in the last few years. Now, it looks like he is being embraced by mainstream Hollywood again, as he is now set to star in a theatrical film from a major studio.

According to Deadline, Depp is set to star in a new film adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens novel A Christmas Carol titled Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol. He will be playing the iconic role of Ebenezer Scrooge.
The movie will be made under Paramount Pictures, marking Depp's first major project from a Hollywood studio in years. Ti West is set to direct, while Andrea Riseborough has also been cast to co-star.
In this version of the classic novel, it is described as "a thrilling ghost story set in Dickens’ London, follows one man’s supernatural journey to face his past, present and future and fight for a second chance."
It is currently slated for release in theaters on November 13, 2026, just in time for the holiday season next year. Production will likely begin soon.
However, this is not the only Christmas Carol movie adaptation that is in the works at the moment. Robert Eggers is also working on his own version of the Dickens novel with Willem Dafoe attached to star as Scrooge.

Depp is also set to star in the upcoming action thriller film Day Drinker. The project is under Lionsgate and is also considered to be part of his Hollywood comeback. Marc Webb served as director.
The film also stars Penélope Cruz, Madelyn Cline, Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle. Production took place in Spain this year, with a 2026 release also being planned.
It tells the story of a private yacht bartender (Cline) who encounters a mysterious, onboard guest (Depp). They soon find themselves entangled with a criminal figure (Cruz) and connected in ways no one saw coming.
