Prior to the growing anticipation for the release of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special this week, MCU Galaxy fans’ excitement may never see an end as director James Gunn spoiled three changes that everyone can expect from the final and third installment, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Sitting down recently with Comicbook’s Phase Zero, Gunn revealed the transition the Guardians have had to go through these past couple of years, which includes acquiring a new ship and welcoming a new crew member.
“Well, I always try to be balanced with these things. So I think it’s wonderful [that] people should see the Holiday Special a lot about where the Guardians have been in the past few years,” said the director.
Gunn saw no minute to dash the new name of the crew’s ship, “You’re gonna see how they now inhabit Knowhere, they’ve got a new ship called the Bowie…"
In keeping with Peter Quill's tradition of naming ships after historical figures, the Bowie is probably a nod to musician David Bowie. In the past, Star Lord named his spaceship Milano as a tribute to his childhood crush, actress Alyssa Milano, and the Benatar ship is for American singer-songwriter Pat Benatar.
The director dropped another spoiler about the Guardian’s whereabouts, hissing that they are currently traveling to space with a new dog specialized in telekinesis.
“A dog is part of their crew now, [and] it has telekinesis, named Cosmo.” Gunn shared.
The director expressed his gratitude to be able to create the holiday special prior to the final installment for the Guardians.

“The Holiday Special was a Trojan horse for me to sneak in stuff that becomes important in Vol. 3 so I don’t have to spend a lot of time at the start of that movie explaining it.” he said.
Gunn shared that Vol. 3 will be extremely emotional, and the holiday special was a break from all the necessary drama.
He conveyed, “Vol. 3 is a very, very emotional movie… But it was also almost like the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special days were like snow days. That was recess. That was fun.”
The Guardians’ current location, Knowhere, was the last place where Quill saw his version of Gamora. It was also the head of Celestial beings, which were recently explored in 2021's Eternals.
The Holiday Special debuts this Friday, November 25 on Disney+. See trailer below:
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to arrive in theaters on May 5, 2023.
