Guardians of the Galaxy was initially thought to have ended in Vol. 2, however, James Gunn is helming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as its ‘real’ final journey for the Guardians. As it happens, Vol. 3 will also be Gunn’s final project for Marvel Studios, since he will be working on building the DC extended universe. Recently, Gunn also shared how much ‘easier’ it was to write Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special compared to its Vol. 3.
When asked about the progress of future potential Guardians of the Galaxy material, James Gunn reveals how much fun he had writing the holiday special, compared to the ‘torture’ he was feeling for its upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Check out his quote below:
“I’ll be honest, I wrote the [Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday] screenplay in a few hours, so it just kind of spilled out of me. It was very easy. Everything about shooting it was easy. Everything about getting the performances out of people was easy, whereas Vol. 3 was torture in every way.”
There is no doubt that special holiday moments of canon characters will always be more fun to write, especially when it’s similar to having filler episodes in anime series where we just get to see the characters goof off without worrying about losing them to war.
In this case, the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is about the Guardians trying to cheer up Star-Lord (played by Chris Pratt) by making his Christmas special. In doing so, it involved the Guardians searching for real-life actor Kevin Bacon (who played himself in the film), Peter Quill’s personal hero.
This is the second holiday-themed MCU film after Werewolf By Night for Halloween and its entertainment purpose is to lighten the mood before we actually see things unfold soon in the MCU, seeing as Star-Lord will most likely be trying to move forward from losing Gamora, while also, perhaps, welcoming the Gamora who came from a different timeline.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 premieres on May 5, 2023.
