Jade Thirlwall said "f*** you" onstage to everything she and her fans oppose, including "misogyny," "performative allyship," "transphobia," and "J.K. Rowling."
The former Little Mix member held a show in London on Saturday evening, where she performed in front of an estimated crowd of 60,000.
What Did Jade Thirlwall Say About J.K. Rowling During Her Recent Performance?
The audience at the Mighty Hoopla music festival went wild when Jade Thirlwall stepped onto the main stage, especially when she began listing things she likely finds offensive and encouraged the crowd to chant "f*** you" in response.
"I want to see you with middle fingers up in the air,” the singer said before performing her next song, FUFN (F*** You For Now).
The 32-year-old mentioned words such as "bad sex," and the crowd responded by yelling "f*** you."
At one point, Thirlwall said "J.K. Rowling," and the crowd chanted the curse word even louder before cheering for the singer.
A fan in the audience captured the moment and uploaded it to TikTok, captioning the video: "@JADE is our IT girl."
Thirlwall’s introduction to her new song comes from her upcoming album, That’s Showbiz Baby, which is set to be released on September 12.
Now performing under the name Jade as a solo artist, Thirlwall has long been recognized as an ally, advocating for the LGBTQIA+ community and speaking out against transphobia and supporters of conversion therapy.
It’s apparent that Thirlwall has joined the list of celebrities who have become vocal in their opposition to Rowling’s views.
The Harry Potter author has been under fire for actively criticizing trans individuals, whom she firmly believes pose a danger to the safe spaces and rights of women.
Rowling’s feminist stance has led her to establish the Women’s Fund Organization, a group whose purpose is to advocate for women’s "sex-based rights" in women-only spaces, the workplace, and public life.
What's Up with J.K. Rowling Launching a Women’s Rights Fund?
Author J.K. Rowling launched the J.K. Rowling Women’s Fund (JKRWF) on May 24, a private funding organization that aims to advocate for women fighting for their "sex-based rights," in the workplace, in public life, and in women-only spaces.
According to its official website, "It provides women with the means and confidence to bring to justice cases that make legal precedents, force policy change, and make positive contributions to women’s lives in the future."
Aside from preserving their rights, the legal fund will also provide financial assistance to women who have lost their livelihoods or faced discrimination due to gender-critical views.
Rowling is also known for supporting For Women Scotland, a campaign group that challenged the Scottish government’s definition of "woman." Therefore, the UK Supreme Court ruled under the 2010 Equality Act that the legal definition of a woman refers to someone who is biologically female.
Because of this, trans women in the UK are no longer allowed access to single-sex spaces, legal protections, and women’s sports, even if they hold a Gender Recognition Certificate.
In 2022, Rowling also funded Beira’s Place in Edinburgh, a rape crisis and sexual violence center for women. However, the center does not admit trans women.
Rowling’s views understandably continue to divide public opinion. Some have labeled her a TERF, or Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist, a term used for individuals who are seen as opposing trans-inclusive policies.
Her stance is considered "controversial" because of the extent of her opposition to trans rights, often reflected in her social media posts. Nevertheless, she has also gained supporters who share her views.
For example, following Rowling’s announcement of JKRWF, social activist and athlete Riley Gaines took to X to express her gratitude. She tweeted on May 25: "@jk_rowling is a modern day civil rights hero. Thank you."
