From selling bathwater to sexily flaunting her “genes” with American Eagle, Sydney Sweeney continues to face backlash.
Fans are wondering if the sexually charged ads were part of Sydney’s plans to be “taken seriously” in the industry or if she has a secret debt to pay behind the scenes.
Well, here’s what her previous interviews say about that.
What’s Up with Sydney Sweeney’s Latest Projects?
The first time Cassie faced criticism was when she began advertising her bathwater towards men (and boys?).
While fans initially believed the genie advertisement was supposed to be a satirical take in how men are easy to manipulate, the bathwater stuck and its price tag drew head scratching from the Internet.
Sweeney first rose to fame upon landing Cassie’s role in Euphoria, before becoming a part of the Spider-Verse through Madame Web, star in her own romcom, Anyone But You, and eventually, directing and producing her own films to make her mark in Hollywood.
Despite the backlash from the ‘bathwater’ incident, Sweeney’s advertisement strategy didn’t stop there. If anything, it seems to have rekindled the concept—this time, with jeans.

Instead of hearing from the Emmy nominee herself, fans only got to hear the jean brand’s side, in which they tried to protect Sweeney’s image:
“‘Sydney Sweeney has great jeans’ is and always was about the jeans," American Eagle wrote in an Instagram statement this August, "Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone."
Now, the real question is, was it all Sweeney’s idea?
Is Sydney Sweeney Dealing with Financial Troubles? What Previous Interviews Reflect About Her
In October last year, Sweeney got candid on how her family “losing everything” became a “catalyst” so that her parents’ divorce, declared bankruptcy, and struggles to reach Los Angeles auditions “wouldn’t be for nothing.”
“That fear will always be instilled in me. I’m a huge saver. I don’t just go and spend money,” she added, “I like making, hopefully, smart choices with the money I'm making. But I don't think I'll ever actually feel comfortable."
This deep-seated fear of financial instability has led some fans to speculate that her recent ad campaigns may be a way to quickly secure finances, even if they contradict her goal to be “taken seriously.”

Another interview highlighted how much Sweeney had to “prove herself—as a young woman, an actor and as a businessperson.” The 27-year-old even expressed her disappointment over being cast-typed into cookie cutters of Euphoria’s hypersexualized character, Cassie.
And yet, despite those observations and self-proclamations, she appears to lean towards advertisements that don’t necessarily showcase her true talent and mission.
However, amid her career decisions, she did previously admit she was looking for a different direction.
In this case, it was her choice not to get married to ex-fiancé Jonathan Davino as she still seeks to “learn more about herself”, which may include diving into these ads.
For now, it remains to be seen whether Sweeney has financial trouble, but the true story might be more nuanced than fans’ speculation suggests.
