  • Key Update: Showrunner Jim Field Smith is already exploring paths for the potential third season.
  • Status: Confirmed

  • Quick Answer: Apple TV hasn't officially renewed Hijack, but the showrunner is developing ideas for Season 3 focused on Sam Nelson’s survival and unresolved feud with Stuart.

With the second season recently ending its run, fans are now wondering whether Hijack will be renewed for a third season, or if it was the end of the road for Idris Elba's Sam Nelson.

The hit Apple TV thriller show's sophomore season moved the action to a subway train in Berlin, Germany, where Sam was forced to hold the passengers hostage by the bad guy responsible for killing his son Kai. Now that the storyline has been resolved, there is no question that we will see Sam in another hostage situation in a different mode of transportation next season.

So far, Apple TV has not renewed Hijack for a third season, following the airing of the second season finale.

In an interview with Variety, showrunner Jim Field Smith shared that there have been no formal discussions yet to do a third season of the series.

"I don’t really think so much like that. I think more like, is there more story for Sam? It’s not so much like, 'Oh, could we do it again?' Because, of course, you can do it again. Do I want to do it again? That’s a different conversation. Right now I’ve literally just delivered this season," he said.

However, Smith is already considering ideas for where they can take the third season and what the next hostage might be.

"If Apple decides they want another bite of the Hijack cherry, the question I will always ask is, what story is there for Sam? Not, where can we do it, but why? Of course, yeah, it could be on a boat. It could be on an e-bike, it could be in the back of a limo, it could be, you know, a submarine," he said.

"Or it could transcend the Hijack format, and it could move into a different arena. But that’s what I mean. The precinct is kind of irrelevant. It’s more about 'Where could Sam go?'"

Smith also acknowledged that the potential third season should address some of the unresolved storylines from the second season.

"As you said, Stuart’s still alive, there’s obviously beef between those two, so clearly, there’s different routes we could go down," he explained.

"If we did a Season 3, it would have to be connected to Season 2. You can’t just go, 'Well, this is just a successful show, so we’re just going to carry on making it.' I’m not interested in that. I don’t think anyone’s interested in watching that either."
