The entire Dragon Ball timeline isn’t as convoluted as other properties. In fact, it's pretty straightforward and quite easy to follow even for a fan who's new to the series.

However, one aspect of the hit franchise has been highly contested by diehards for nearly three decades. Is the ever-so-divisive Dragon Ball GT part of the show's canon? Longtime followers probably know the answer by now but let's dive into it still.

The anime premiered on February 7, 1996, on Japan’s Fuji TV and spanned 64 episodes in total. Dragon Ball GT is widely considered a polarizing entry to the franchise, marking a significant change to Goku’s arc who was transformed back into a child and is once again on a mission to retrieve the seven dragon balls — only this time, the orbs are scattered across the vast galaxy.

Consisting of four major sagas or arcs, GT ended its run on November 19, 1997. While it wasn't as celebrated as its predecessors, it's still considered a commercial success that generated a cult following.

So, the answer is both yes and no. But before we get to the nitty-gritty, let's explore the anime's place in the timeline. Dragon Ball GT is supposedly set 5 years after the events of Dragon Ball Z which culminated following the defeat of Kid Buu aka the Peaceful World Saga.

The anime’s story wasn’t taken from the manga but GT is still technically canon considering creator Akira Toriyama approved its conception, even designing the characters’ looks.

Will GT Ever be Part of the Dragon Ball Continuity?

At this rate, it’s hard to tell but several key elements from the series have made their way not only to the main Dragon Ball canon but a ton of other media as well. But with the ongoing series Dragon Ball Daima seemingly taking a page out of GT’s playbook, it further solidifies the 1996 anime’s non-canon status, at least for now.

All episodes of Dragon Ball GT are available to stream on Crunchyroll.
