From there, he bid an emotional farewell with the help of the Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker). But in a very unexpected twist, the Time Lord regenerated into a blonde woman who looked exactly like Rose Tyler. With this shocking development, will Tyler become the Sixteenth Doctor?
“I am… not the next Doctor,” Billie Piper said at the For the Love of Fantasy & Sci-Fi event in London (via ComicBook). “I am Rose Tyler in hiatus. Sorry, that’s a really cryptic answer.”
She continued to explain that since Doctor Who Season 16 isn’t in production yet, she couldn’t reveal anything about it.
But while the actress appears to be playing it safe with her answer and refusing to give anything away about the new Time Lord, fans believe there could be more to the story than Piper simply becoming the new Doctor.
Will There Be a Doctor Who Season 16?
So far, the BBC has yet to greenlight Doctor Who Season 16. The show has been put on hiatus after the network canceled this year’s Christmas Special and put the series out to competitive tender after Russell T Davies stepped down as showrunner and Disney ended its co-production partnership.
But the wait may not be too long. According to Cultbox, there are already multiple conversations taking place as studios prepare their bids.
Allegedly, Electric Entertainment has had preliminary talks with the BBC and even reached out to the Tenth and Fourteenth Doctor, David Tennant, to discuss his possible return.
This may support the claim that the BBC has yet to post an official Invitation to Tender (ITT) document, which would formally begin the process of inviting pitches.
There are claims that the BBC is negotiating before the tender has even been posted, which could potentially breach the BBC Charter if deemed unethical.
However, it has long been acknowledged that preliminary discussions can take place before the ITT is posted, as the BBC needs to speak with studios to assess the market.
With interest in Doctor Who’s tendering process remaining high, Season 16 could be in the works sooner than expected.
