After 20 years, V for Vendetta is set to return to the screen, with James Gunn and Peter Safran of DC Studios serving as executive producers.
Rebooted as a series for HBO under the direction of Pete Jackson, many are wondering whether this new adaptation will be part of Gunn’s DC Universe, given that it falls under DC Studios. So, will it be connected or stand on its own?
Will V for Vendetta Be Part of the DCU?

Gunn has already been developing DCU Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, introducing a new interconnected superhero universe across TV and film.
However, new projects are still being revealed, and one of them is V for Vendetta. It will be the latest DC Studios live-action series on HBO, following the 2019 critically acclaimed Watchmen and last year’s The Penguin, starring Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti.
But like those two series, which are not part of the DCU, the TV adaptation of V for Vendetta will also stand apart from the main continuity due to the nature of its story.
Instead, it will most likely fall under DC Elseworlds, a banner for separate, self-contained universes where projects like The Batman and its spin-offs exist outside the main DCU, much like The Penguin.
With that said, V for Vendetta is believed to be a fresh, standalone adaptation, separate from Gunn’s ongoing DCU slate, which primarily focuses on DC’s superhero characters.
What is V for Vendetta About?

So far, details about the TV adaptation of V for Vendetta remain scarce. However, in addition to Jackson directing and Gunn and Safran serving as executive producers, the series will also be executive produced by Ben Stephenson through Poison Pen and Leanne Klein of Wall to Wall Media, which is part of Warner Bros. Television Studios UK. The series will be produced by Warner Bros. Television.
Based on Alan Moore and David Lloyd’s comic serial, which debuted in the British anthology Warrior in 1982 and was later taken over and published by DC in 1988, V for Vendetta is set in a dystopian, not-too-distant future Britain controlled by the fascist Norsefire party.
V is an anarchist recognizable by his distinctive Guy Fawkes mask, who seeks to overthrow the government with the help of Evey Hammond, a young woman he rescues from the country’s secret police.
Starring Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman as V and Evey, the 2005 film was a box office success, grossing $134.7 million against a production budget of just $50–54 million.
Its popularity remains strong to this day, with Warner Bros. set to bring it back to theaters in November 2026 in honor of its 20th anniversary.
Interestingly, Channel 4 was once set to produce a V for Vendetta series, but that project never moved forward.
So, if this DC Studios project pushes through, many will surely look forward to seeing V on the small screen.
