Apple To Deliver A ‘Superficial’ iPhone 14 Design Upgrade?
After numerous reports claiming iPhone 14 Pro models would drop the notch to achieve a larger i-shaped cutout in its display, the original source shared the exact dimensions of the opening, which is 5.631mm. Avid Apple fans know this suggests that iPhone 14 Pro models are not arriving with a major design upgrade at all.
Leaker ShrimpApplePro, who broke the news about the original i-cutout in September, explained that 5.631mm aligns with the camera opening inside iPhone 13 Pro’s notch. “Tbh, it wasn’t any smaller from the iPhone 13. 13’s sensor holes are just hidden in the notch,” the mysterious leaker said, exposing the biggest design trick and risk in the forthcoming iPhone 14 Pro.
Forbes reported that, though Apple may omit the notch in an attempt to modernize the iPhone design this year, this new claim suggests that iPhone 14 Pro would have a “superficial” upgrade. After all, the Cupertino-based company has not been able to diminish the Face ID and front camera. Instead, it simply cut away the notch to show the display around these sensors.

Tech journalist Gordon Kelly wrote:
“While the standard iPhone 14 and new iPhone 14 Max will retain the notch, leaks reveal they will adopt it in 2023 which is not a move Apple would make if this was a transitory design. This is a big gamble for Apple and, despite the obvious 'i' marketing opportunities of the cutout, it could prove a hard sell.”
Analyst Ross Young claimed, at Display Supply Chain Consultants, that Apple is likely to start moving away from its signature notch to a design that incorporates a hole-punch for the front-facing camera and a pill-shaped hole for the Face ID sensors. The rumored new design would allegedly be implemented to the imminent iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models in 2022.

The standard iPhone 14 model, for its part, is expected to continue to use a smaller notch design from its predecessor, the iPhone 13. Ross penned:
“This will be another instantly recognizable display shape for Apple.”
Ross Young furthered that the pill and hole “may get smaller” in 2023 via its iPhone 15 lineup. He also believes Apple is planning to replace the standard Face ID unit with under-display facial authentication, saying:
"This does require panel redesign for Face ID to operate at high accuracy. Perhaps the most critical area is replacing the conventional Yb/MgAg cathode on top of the OLED stack, which is not very transmissive in IR regions."
iPhone 14 Release Date, Other Rumored Specs And Features
Meanwhile, the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max are all expected to be introduced at an Apple event that is likely to be held in September 2022. Should the tech giant follow previous launch timelines, it could take place in the first or second week of September.
Aside from its alleged “superficial” new design, the upcoming iPhone 14 is said to use the Qualcomm Snapdragon X65 modem, which is the first 10 Gigabit 5G modem and antenna system for smartphones in the world. Apple reportedly ordered 5G radio frequency (RF) chips from TSMC as it would be using its own technology instead of having Samsung-made chips.

Reports are also rife that iPhone 14 would feature WiFi 6E connectivity. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed the WiFi 6E would offer high-speed wireless transmissions necessary for AR and VR experiences. The technology is also projected to be used in the mixed reality headset that could arrive within 2022.
There are also speculations that the upcoming iPhone 14 line could increase the storage to 2TB. To recall, Apple added a new 1TB storage tier to the iPhone 13 Pro models.
Furthermore, iPhone 14 models are rumored to launch sans physical sim slot as Apple is said to be transitioning to an eSIM-only design. The tech giant is allegedly advising major U.S. carriers to prepare for the launch of e-SIM only smartphones by 2022, which suggests that the imminent iPhone 14 models would likely be the first to come without a SIM slot.
While these rumors could be true, it is important to note that Apple has yet to confirm or deny these speculations plaguing the highly anticipated iPhone 14 line. So, techies should take all these unverified claims lightly until everything is proven true and correct.
