There is no doubt that Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker losing Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 remains to be one of the most heartbreaking scenes to watch on screen. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 VFX supervisor Jerome Chen shared a behind-the-scenes moment between the two actors in preparation for Gwen’s death scene.
Chen revealed how the actors approached filming the death scene in Sean O’Connell’s book, With Great Power: How Spider-Man Conquered Hollywood during the Golden Age of Comic Book Blockbusters (via CBR). To give a little context, in the duration of The Amazing Spider-Man, movie stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone were dating in real life, which made the chemistry between them all the more natural and gushy to look at.
Upon Chen telling his story about the extreme lengths the couple had to go through to deliver this gut-wrenching scene, it becomes all the more agonizing to realize how far they went. Read his full quote below:

Spider-Man: No Way Home even made a reference by giving Andrew Garfield a redemption arc of saving Tom Holland’s MJ (Zendaya) before falling off the Statue of Liberty. It is all the more saddening to see Garfield cry upon seeing MJ in his arms in No Way Home, but he did it. He saved ‘her’ this time.
Meanwhile, Sony Pictures’ Madame Web will premiere on February 16, 2024.
