Robert Redford, who rose to Hollywood stardom as an actor and director, passed away at 89 years old on Tuesday morning, September 16, 2025.

The Oscar-winning director was best known for his films, including 1969's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and 1985's Out of Africa. He was also one of the founders of the Sundance Film Festival, the largest independent film festival in the US.

According to The New York Times, Cindi Berger, his publicist, said he died at his home "in the mountains of Utah—the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy."

No cause of death was provided in the statement, but Berger also told the outlet in a statement that he died in his sleep.

Redford first received his Oscar nomination for 1973's The Sting, the best director award for 1980's Ordinary People, and another best director nomination for 1994's Quiz Show.

After making The Old Man & the Gun in August 2018, he was 81, and Redford told Entertainment Weekly he would be retiring. But he clarified he would "never say never" should the right opportunity come through.

A month later, he regretted his retirement and managed to return to the screen in March 2025, for the first time in six years, with a cameo in Dark Winds.
