With HBO's Watchmen confirmed to be a sequel of the original comic, you'd think that the show is going to focus on all new characters this time around. As it turns out, we're still going to have a lot of connections to the past. It's said that Jeremy Irons is playing an older Ozymandias, and now the series has cast someone to play the father of Jon Osterman a.k.a. Dr. Manhattan.
As per Geeks World Wide, Anatole Taubman has been cast as Hans Osterman in the series. Just in case you're not familiar, Taubman is a character actor who has had appearances in Captain America: The First Avenger, Speed Racer, and Taken.

With the series set to take place in the present time, I'm guessing that Osterman is just going to appear in some sort of flashback sequence. Some promos have also confirmed that there's going to be some kind of Minutemen documentary within the series, and I guess they could take some found footage of Jon Osterman being interviewed about his son who has become Dr. Manhattan.
It's been speculated that this documentary-within-the-series could be the show's version of the Black Freighter storyline.
Then again, that's all just speculation. We'll just have to wait for the series to come out to actually confirm it.
HBO's Watchmen is currently under production with Leftovers creator Damon Lindelof attached as the showrunner. Catch it when it debuts sometime in 2019.
