Apart from the amount of backlash the Harry Potter reboot received, disturbing death threats were directed at Paapa Essiedu (the newly hired Snape). Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max, Casey Bloys, recently addressed the controversy by alerting fans of their plans to protect everyone in their production team.

Some of the more intense Harry Potter fans shared their negative reaction to having Essiedu land the fan-favorite professor, taking issue with what they have long imagined as white will now be played by a black actor.

Previously, Essiedu shared how serious the disturbing threats had grown over time: "I've been told, 'Quit or I'll murder you. It really matters.' The reality is that if I look at Instagram, I will see somebody saying, 'I'm going to come to your house and kill you.'"

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bloys weighed in on the matter: "The good news-bad news with big IP worlds is you have a lot of passionate fans, huge passionate fan bases. So anytime we do a show like that, not just Harry Potter, but any kind of big IP show, we will always talk to anybody participating about social media and best practices and things like that. It is just a reality."

Despite the rather safe answer, however, Bloys had a much stronger social response to the same issue in his interview with Variety. Bloys explained that they had "anticipated" this kind of response and "tried to have training best practices" on social media on how to better "handle it." The most they can do, however, is to "try to be as careful as we can."

Harry Potter's original author, J.K. Rowling, had also previously given her support to Essiedu's casting by saying she wouldn't "sack an actor from the series" whether or not she had the power to do so, "I don't believe in taking away people's jobs or livelihoods because they hold legally protected beliefs that differ from mine."

First Reactions to the Harry Potter Reboot: "Stellar Editing, But the Spark's Gone"

Now that the official teaser trailer is out, Potterheads got their first look at the entire vibe, cast, and acting chemistry among our new trio and their fellow castmates. Despite the high-quality filming and cinematography that tug at nostalgic heartstrings, though, it might take fans more time to be convinced a reboot was the right choice.

"This is me whenever I see the new Harry Potter," one fan wrote, while using Daniel Radcliffe's iconic line, How dare you stand where he stood?' while another chimed in to say, "Looks really well-produced, the sets and costumes are great... but I feel zero magic. It's missing that little spark. Maybe I'm just too nostalgic for the color grading of the 2001 film."

"What's the [fricking] point of this? Everything is the exact same as the movies, just with different actors and none of the charm," one fan said, as another added, "Looks promising, but the movies still own our childhood magic."

For now, it remains to be seen whether the reboot could truly replicate or improve what the original movies served to fans, but we'll have to wait and see once it lands on the streaming platform.

HBO's Harry Potter series is currently slated to premiere on Christmas 2026 on HBO Max. Stay tuned!
