What Does the Scene with Gwi-Ju and the Dog Mean?
The Atypical Family episode 2 brings viewers to a flashback of how the younger version of Gwi-Ju (played by Jang Ki-Yong) first discovered his powers.
In the Bok family, every power is special in its own way. But Gwi-Ju's has a price.
When his mother warned him not to take his regular route back home, Gwi-Ju didn't listen. His mother saw that in the future, he would have gotten into a terrible car accident if he didn't heed her words.
His mother punished him by taking his candy away for not paying attention.
Because Gwi-Ju wanted to get it back, he accidentally discovered his power by being brought back to the same moment in the past. On that same day, he had discovered that a dog kept dying.
As much as Gwi-Ju wants to turn back the clock and save him, a darker picture looms over him: while he can travel back to the memory he had, he can no longer change it. He can only watch it.
This was a traumatic and devastating experience for a young boy, especially since the guilt kept sinking in whenever he would relive those memories. However, something far worse beckoned on the Bok family.

Will Gwi-Ju Gain His Powers Back? Ep 2 Sparks Hope He Will
One of the biggest mysteries The Atypical Family hopes to solve is how the Boks can gain their powers back.
They had lost it after facing modern-day problems such as bulimia, insomnia, and an addiction to smartphones instead of the real world.
This doesn't exactly paint a good future for the Bok, considering they don't know what the solution is.
That is until the matriarch of the family, Bok Man-Heum (Ko Du-Shim), foresaw in her dream that Da-Hae (Chun Woo-Hee) may be the answer to their problem.
In this case, she believes that a new blossom of love would bring Gwi-Ju out of the slump and depression, which would potentially get his powers back.
This theory seemed to be on the right track, especially since Gwi-Ju's powers started flourishing after warming up to Da-Hae. He was able to relive his memories while interacting with the past Da-Hae inside it.
