Gainax’s Gurren Lagann was screened in select US cinemas recently, to the delight of many. The screenings also meant that fans suffered heartbreak once again because of the Gurren Lagann wedding scene.
A wedding is typically a fun and sweet affair, but in many stories, weddings often take a turn for the dramatic, as is the case with Gurren Lagann.
At least, the wedding was preceded by an epic finale that delighted viewers, especially on the big screen.

Reliving Gurren Lagann’s Epic Finale
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is an anime by Gainax, though it’s more closely associated with Trigger.
After all, many staff members who worked on this anime went on to work for Trigger, the studio that’s best known for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and the ongoing Delicious in Dungeon.
Thanks to its impressive animation and sheer spectacle, Gurren Lagann continues to be one of the most popular shows of the 2000s. Despite being popular, the series has not gotten a sequel.
Instead, the series received a two-part compilation film that features newly animated scenes. These films were originally released in 2008 and 2009.
To celebrate the series’ 15th anniversary, the movies returned to Japanese cinemas in 2023. This was followed by a US cinema run on January 16 and 17 for Part 1, with Part 2 being screened on January 23 and 24.
With the films returning to cinemas for a limited time, fans were able to relive the galaxy-spanning finale of the anime.
This got lots of love from fans as Gurren Lagann became a trending topic on X. On the flip side, it also brought lots of fans to tears because of the emotional wedding scene.

Gurren Lagann Wedding Scene: A Bittersweet and Tear-Jerking Ending
Seven days after the climactic battle, Simon and Nia are wed in a ceremony attended by everyone in Team Dai-Gurren.
At first, this Gurren Lagann wedding scene is a happy occasion, but this all changes after Simon kisses Nia. That’s because Nia dissolves soon after, with Simon telling Nia he will never forget her.
It is then revealed that Nia is a virtual lifeform that was created by Antispiral. With Antispiral being defeated, it’s a small miracle that Nia was able to live on for a week.
Nia’s death ends the series on a bittersweet yet still hopeful note. It might not be the happiest way to conclude things, but it is no doubt a moving and memorable conclusion.
For fans who missed the cinema re-release of the compilation films, there’s sadly no word yet on plans for another theatrical run.
