One of the signature traits the legendary agent Gibbs embodies in the main NCIS series is the fact that he had specific beverage choices in particular moments.

While he is usually seen drinking coffee whenever he works on a case, he also has his own stash of bottles in the basement for special occasions.

These rare occasions include opening up and unwinding from his own line of work. How Gibbs began to like the taste of Bourbon actually unfolds in NCIS: Origins in the most unexpected way.

The premiere of NCIS: Origins, Enter Sandman Part 1, shows Lala Dominguez (played by Mariel Molino) buying Gibbs an aged bottle of American whiskey after she finds out that he has never had a bottle in his entire life.

Not only do we get to see how Gibbs developed his own coping mechanism after the loss of his wife and child, but the Origins series also introduces how huge of an impact Lala has over his drink of choice.

As NCIS: Origins executive producer Sean Harmon said in a recent interview, "The world is used to seeing Gibbs as 'the boss', but in NCIS: Origins, we are dealing with a much less tempered version of him."

"The character of Gibbs has resonated with global audiences because he is a role model and at the same time someone you can relate to," Sean explained, before adding what else fans can expect from the prequel.

NCIS: Origins offers a different take on Gibbs, "what makes him tick" as well as "meeting some of the characters who influenced him along the way." In this case, one of them happens to be Lala.
