The highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the comic book The Umbrella Academy hasn't even premiered yet but Gerard Way is already looking towards the future. The comic book creator believes that the series is set to pave the way for more publications and shows in the Umbrella Academy Universe.
Way recently spoke to Collider about what fans can expect in the Netflix series. Interestingly, the My Chemical Romance frontman revealed that he made sure that showrunner Steve Blackman knew everything about the comic book storyline, even the ones that would be explored in future publications.
"What I did for Steve Blackman and the writers in that first writers room was to create an eighteen-page document that laid everything out. Even of the graphic novels that haven't come out yet. Which should equal eight when we're all done. So I gave them the blueprint for what happens because you do want to seed certain things in there for future series and the hope is that it's a success so that you do a lot more of these."
There is little doubt that Way is very hands-on with what happens in the live-action series. He also revealed that he and fellow Umbrella Academy creator Gabriel Bá go out of their way to provide materials for Blackman and the writers.
"They're very curious what Gabriel and I are doing next. We always send them the new comics. They really want to know what's happening," Way said.
The series stars Ellen Page, Robert Sheehan, Tom Hopper, Mary J. Blige, and Kate Walsh. The pilot episode is directed by The Exorcist creator Jeremy Slater.
The Umbrella Academy will premiere on Netflix on February 15.
