Although his Justice League movie may not have progressed, director George Miller has moved on to bigger, more well-received projects with films like Happy Feet and his revival of the Mad Max series.
With him getting praise for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Miller was asked whether he would be eager to take on another huge IP in the form of the next Thor film, and it looks like Miller is up for the challenge.
George Miller on Possibly Helming the Next Thor Movie
Talking to ComicBook, Miller was asked whether he would be open to directing Thor 5 for Marvel Studios, to which he replied that he would just be happy to work with Chris Hemsworth again. Miller says:
“I would work with Chris on anything. I really would. He’s a wonderful actor. He’s got the full range of all the skills… I mean, you’ve got to be athletic, physically… But, you also gotta be athletic emotionally and intellectually to take on these very, ultimately fairly complex, any role really.”
So far, Marvel hasn’t announced the next Thor movie, but Thor: Love and Thunder has left the door open for a sequel—plus a successor for Thor should he ever need someone to take on the mantle after himself.
Thor Movies Through the Years
While the Thor franchise seems to be the only Marvel hero that hasn’t been effectively replaced, it’s worth noting that the films have had a rocky journey throughout the years. The first film had Kenneth Branagh (Murder on the Orient Express) at the helm, with Dark World passing the director’s chair to Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones).
After the poor reception of the second film, Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit) stepped in to reboot the brand with Thor: Ragnarok; and while that film was successful, the same kind of schtick didn’t work out for the sequel Love and Thunder which was heavily bashed—despite going all-in on Waititi’s wacky approach to the God of Thunder.
Why Miller could be a Great Choice
As of now, no director is attached to the next Thor movie, but a lot of fans think that Miller is a great choice. Not only does he have great visual flair which would be a perfect follow-up to the Waititi Thor films, but he also managed to get a great performance out of Hemsworth in Furiosa.
With Marvel not knowing what to do with Thor post Endgame, there’s multiple ways for his character to move forward. Some are hoping that they follow the comics and just establish him as the new Odin with a different Thor running around. Maybe there is room for Hemsworth’s Thor to have his own Logan moment at the end of time, millennia after the events of the first Avengers movie.
The Thor: God of Thunder comic arc followed the story of three eras of Thor’s life told simultaneously—the young Thor before Mjolnir, the present Thor, and the old Thor who had one eye and one arm. Maybe that could be Hemsworth’s sendoff movie?
A fifth Thor movie has not been officially announced.
