James Gunn has long opened the floor for anyone to join the DCU, and Vincent D'Onofrio happens to be one of them.

While best known for playing Kingpin, the Daredevil star is also hoping to get a chance to explore a different superhero franchise in the future.

Which DC Character Does Vincent D'Onofrio Want to Play?

A new Swamp Thing movie has been slated in Gunn's plans to rebuild the DCU, starting with the Gods and Monsters batch. While the production is still in the early stages, D'Onofrio very much hopes that he gets to play the lead in the upcoming horror blockbuster.

The Full Metal Jacket star made quite the impression when he brought Wilson Fisk, aka The Kingpin, to life in Daredevil and Daredevil: Born Again, and there is no doubt he would do the same thing to the Swamp Thing if he lands the job.

"I've always been attracted to people that are broken, and [Swamp Thing]'s like, broken," D'Onofrio said on the LA Comic Con panel this weekend, "He's not only heartbroken, but his whole life is broken into a million pieces. And it's like the Hunchback of Notre Dame."

D'Onofrio added, "He's not attractive, he lives in a swamp, it's tough, you know? And he's in love, and that's an incredible thing."

Why Vincent D'Onofrio Playing the Swamp Thing Makes Sense

In a way, The Kingpin and the Swamp Thing share similar dilemmas and backstories that D'Onofrio could just as well touch upon if he gets picked for the role.

With the way D'Onofrio described the Swamp Thing, doesn't Kingpin himself suffer from a deep-seated lack of love and acceptance? Stemming from his childhood trauma and a desperate need to control, demand respect, and form an emotional connection with another human being are the same things the Swamp Thing hopes to experience, too.

"The narration, if you remember all the words, he was so emotional, at times so touching. I couldn't believe it," D'Onofrio added, "I was in my late 20s or 30s. I think it's just his emotional life, I think is what's attractive to me. I'm never going to get the chance to play it."

While the Kingpin and the Swamp Thing are also portrayed as "evil" or villainous, their complex and tragic backgrounds complicate where they stand, even more so in the modern world, where ideals and morals change and transform over time.

They may be perceived as monsters, but incredible writers, like how Kingpin was written, could bring them to life and understand that their worlds are no black and white scenarios.

For now, you can catch Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin on Daredevil and Born Again, both streaming on Disney+.
