Former Thor Writer Explains Why His Avengers: Endgame Portrayal Was Problematic

Fans have had two weeks to process how Thor was portrayed in Avengers: Endgame. Though most of us would agree that he was fairly entertaining, due to Chris Hemsworth's performance, there were a lot of people who thought his portrayal was problematic. This might get others to complain about those "SJWs" but former Thor and Amazing Spider-Man writer J. Michael Straczynski hit the nail on the head when it comes to how he was portrayed.

Though Straczynski did praise Hemsworth for his performance, he wasn't a fan of the fact that they made Thor a joke. Sure, some of the jokes about him were funny, but when you consider the fact that he is depressed over the failure to save half of his people, the destruction of his homeland, and the recent deaths of his father and brother, it suddenly becomes less comedic.

No, making Thor fat wasn't a problem. Treating him like a punchline was. Yes, you could have had some jokes made at his expense but the other characters should have sympathized with his plight more. Hell, it would have been better if he made self-deprecating jokes about himself while the others try to motivate him to get out of his slump.

Admittedly, there are a couple of moments that make his portrayal better. That scene with his mother was pretty emotional and she gave him the affection and attention he needed when he was down, whilst also helping him get better. There's also the fact that he was still worthy of Mjolnir, showing that his depression and weight-gain did not make him worthless.

Avengers: Endgame is now showing in theaters. What did you think of Thor's portrayal?
