HBO and Craig Mazin had broken a decades’ long curse of bad video game adaptations when they made The Last of Us back in 2023, and the second season is expected to come out in 2025.

Just in, the show has just dropped the first official trailer, and it should bring back some traumatic memories for anyone who had played The Last of Us Part II.

The Last of Us Season 2 Releases First Trailer

The trailer only runs for two minutes, but it does show a lot of key scenes from the game including Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) escaping from a horde of infected, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina (Isabela Merced) sharing a moment with the guitar, and Joel (Pedro Pascal) teaching Ellie how to play it. Check this out:

The song playing over the trailer, Future Days by Pearl Jam, would also be familiar to players since Joel also plays this song to Ellie in the game:

Besides that, the trailer also gives us a better look at Jackson as well as some other supporting characters like Jesse (Young Mazino) and Isaac (Jeffrey Wright). Just like with the first season, it’s possible that the series could be adding some original story elements and characters as well.

New Characters and Scenes

It also looks like Catherine O’ Hara’s character is a new one made for the series. It’s not entirely pointed out who she is, but it does look like she’s Jackson’s resident shrink, and Joel could be seeing her for therapy for whatever took place in the first season.

The show also gives a look at the ruthless leader of the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) who is played by Jeffrey Wright; coincidentally, Wright also played the character in the game. In the game though, Isaac’s ruthlessness is mostly implied, but here it looks like the show is actually going to be giving him some screentime, and it could contextualize Isaac’s beef with the Seraphites.

Speaking of the Seraphites (or “Scars”), there’s only a shot of one of them in the trailer, but some of their propaganda can also be seen on the walls with the “Feel Her Love” message referring to their leader, ‘The Prophet’. The Prophet doesn’t really appear in the game, but it’s possible that her fate could be explained in the second season; maybe she’s the prisoner Isaac has, and that’s why the WLF and the Seraphites are at war with each other.

Will the Second Season Cover the Whole TLOU Part II?

With the first season covering all the events of the first game, it was guessed that the second season could be covering the whole story of The Last of Us Part II. But seeing as a lot of things happened with that story, it’s possible that the second season could just focus on the first half of the game, and then move on to the second half with the third season.

With the original game also containing a lot of flashbacks, maybe they can push those scenes forward into the second season.

Then again, until we get some more reveals, the best thing that fans can really do is just speculate.

The Last of Us Season 2 is expected to come out on HBO sometime in 2025.
