Disney Pixar attempted to "explain" our inner personalities with Inside Out, but now they're looking to explain our very existence with this upcoming movie called Soul. A new trailer has been released for the film, and it gives us a good look at Pixar's notion of an afterlife.
Here's the official description:
Joe Gardner is a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22, who has never understood the appeal of the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what's great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life's most important questions.
The concept is basically like Inside Out, but instead of looking inward, it's looking at something else that's more… universal. I especially love the contrast between the animation of life and afterlife, with the afterlife being more cartoonish; and is it just me, or did Pixar just add another level of realism when it comes to their human characters?
With the Coronavirus cancelling multiple releases, I'm curious if Pixar is considering the same for Soul. Then again, with the new trailer released, I think it's already a statement that they plan to push forward with their initial slate. Hopefully the crisis dies down in the next month.
Catch Soul when it hits theaters June 19.
