After ten years, Marvel is finally pushing forward with their Black Widow standalone film, and we have news on who will be joining Scarlett Johansson in her first solo MCU film.
According to Variety, Florence Pugh (Lady Macbeth) is currently in talks to be in the movie. We don't really know who she'll be playing, but there was news going around that the movie was looking for a blonde woman to play the second lead alongside Johansson. Emma Watson was said to be the top choice for the role, but Pugh was said to have gotten great reviews after working on Fighting with My Family. Then again, it's possible that Pugh could be playing someone different and not the second lead.
It's still unclear on whether Black Widow will be a period film explaining Natasha Romanoff's origin or a movie set after Endgame. For now, the last film in the Marvel roster is Spider-Man: Far from Home. Hopefully, we get some official titles and release dates announced once Endgame hits theaters. While I'm fine with an origin movie, I kind of hope we can see woman-lead films that are set in the contemporary timeline. How is it that both Wonder Woman movies and Captain Marvel ended up being period pieces?
Hopefully, we can get more updates on Black Widow soon. Besides Johansson coming back, we know that the director for the movie is Cate Shortland. She's also working on a script from writer Ned Benson.
No release date has been set for Black Widow, but catch the character return in Avengers: Endgame which comes out April 26.
