Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) has always been a big influence on Spider-Man (Tom Holland) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is Tony who first brings Peter Parker into the world of the Avengers, adding the web-slinger to fight alongside him in Captain America: Civil War. Tony is Peter Parker's mentor, close to a father figure even.
Now, as fans continue to mourn the heartbreaking death of Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame, a new Spider-Man: Far From Home fan theory wonders whether Iron Man might have actually been responsible for creating the radioactive spider that gave Peter his powers.
Set during the aftermath of Endgame, the upcoming Spider-Man movie will reportedly reveal how Peter Parker deals with the loss of his teacher, Tony Stark. According to Redditor Impulsive Beetle, a major Stark "secret" will be unveiled at some point in the film, revealing that Tony actually found himself involved in genetic enhancement – an attempt at dealing with otherworldly threats to the planet. One of the results of Tony's tests is a radioactive spider that eventually finds its way to Peter during one of the highschooler's field trips to a Stark facility.
It's an interesting theory, that's for sure. Sure, the theory does pay homage to Spider-Man's origin in the comics, but it also adds a whole lot of complexity to the relationship between Peter Parker and Tony Stark. How will Peter feel learning that it was Tony's spider all along that gave him his abilities? Did Peter know all along? Is that why he's always looked up to Tony so much?
