Christopher Nolan may have created films featuring superheroes, sci-fi, and historical drama, but his adaptation of The Odyssey has fans scratching their heads.
Considering that both adaptations touch on Greek Mythology, here’s why fans are pitting Percy Jackson and the Olympians with The Odyssey.
The Odyssey vs. Percy Jackson: Why the Costume Design Matters to Fans
The official trailer for The Odyssey is out, and fans couldn’t be more enraged at how a kids' show like Percy Jackson and the Olympians has a ‘more accurate’ costume design than the former.
The reactions sprang from one particular photo, where Anne Hathaway’s Penelope was with Tom Holland’s Telemachus.

One fan said, “Percy Jackson having a better costume design than The Odyssey is crazy,” with a photo of Annabeth Chase and Percy Jackson landing on Circe’s Island in season 2.
One fan argued, “Nah, you did not just compare a Christopher Nolan movie to a random a** kids TV show,” while another responded, “The ‘random kids show’ having more accurate clothing than Nolan’s movie with that big a** budget.”
Some added why Tom Holland’s costume doesn’t even make him look like he belongs in the movie, “Why does Telemachus look like a peasant,” while another fan said, “He looks straight out of 2025.”
“Tell me how you wanted to make this movie feel ‘accurate’, Nolan,” another fan chimed in, with another comparing how Nolan did his research with Dunkirk, “The wardrobe design here doesn’t look like it came from ancient Greece at all. What happened, Nolan?”
What Has Christopher Nolan Said About His Adaptation of The Odyssey?
Despite the qualms of fans, the Oscar-winning director has his own explanation behind the choices he made for The Odyssey, including the costume design. This time, Nolan wants “a bit of everything in it.”
“I mean, it truly contains all stories,” Nolan told Empire magazine previously, adding that his take revolves around having a major budget to make cinema great again, “As a filmmaker, you’re looking for gaps in cinematic culture, things that haven’t been done before. And what I saw is that all of this great mythological cinematic work that I had grown up with—Ray Harryhausen movies and other things—I’d never seen that done with the sort of weight and credibility that an A-budget and a big Hollywood, IMAX production could do.”
Similar to the backlash that Wuthering Heights received, perhaps Nolan has his own vision that would be best shown once it premieres on the big screens.
Matt Damon stars as the titular character, his third collaboration with Nolan, following Interstellar and Oppenheimer.
The film also contains A-listers like Tom Holland as Odysseus’s son, Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as his wife, Penelope, and Mia Goth as Melantho.
The Odyssey also stars Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Benny Safdie, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, and Elliot Page in undisclosed roles.
In the meantime, fans can wait until The Odyssey debuts on July 17, 2026.
