Eddie Murphy has confirmed that his fan-favorite Shrek character Donkey is finally getting his own spinoff movie.
With Puss in Boots getting spinoff films in the Shrek franchise, fans have been wondering whether Donkey will also get a solo movie. After all, he has been a fan-favorite character since the first movie in 2001. Murphy's career has also experienced a resurgence in the last few years, which has paved the way for more clamoring from fans.
Is Eddie Murphy's Donkey Finally Getting a Spinoff Movie?

In an interview with Screen Rant, Murphy revealed that production for the Donkey spinoff movie is set to begin this fall, confirming that it is officially happening.
While he is still recording his voice work for Shrek 5, he is already preparing for the spinoff project, and it will likely arrive in theaters in three years.
"We’re still in the booth, and literally, we’re still doing Shrek [5]. We start in September on Donkey — we’re doing a Donkey one, and that’ll [be released] three years from now. But we’re about two years into Shrek 5. Still in the booth and about to start Donkey in September," Murphy said.
The Donkey spinoff movie is expected to take a similar path to the Puss in Boots films.
Murphy teased, "Donkey‘s going to be like how Puss in Boots had his own movie, Donkey’s going to have his own movie — [his] own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys. They’ve written this funny story. We’re doing that, starting that in September."
What to Expect in Shrek 5?
While the Donkey spinoff movie has yet to begin production, fans can first anticipate the release of Shrek 5 in December next year.
Aside from Murphy, Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz are also reprising their roles from the previous films. They are joined by Zendaya, who will voice Shrek and Fiona's daughter Felicia.
There have been rumors for a long time that DreamWorks has been working on a new Shrek movie. It was only officially confirmed last year when the main trio was unveiled to be returning. A teaser was also released earlier this year, revealing the film's updated visual style.
Fans should anticipate more news and announcements regarding the film within the next 17 months.
