The Upside Down wouldn't have been as creepy or as scary if it hadn't been for Vecna and the creatures that lured in the alternate universe. That said, could Stranger Things season 5 introduce new monsters that Mike and the others must face to end it all?
Here's what the Duffer Brothers said in a recent interview.
Does Stranger Things Season 5 Have New Monsters?
Since Stranger Things season 5 ends the series, is it possible for the final season to deliver new monsters, apart from Vecna? When asked during a sitdown interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Duffer said, "No, I don't think [so]."
But don't fret just yet. The fifth season focuses on non-monster-related stuff: "We talked about it, but a lot of this season is about returning to the prior seasons, and we didn't want to overstuff it with new creatures."
He added, "So, as we worked on the season, we thought, 'Let's just have fun with what we've previously established.'"
Ross Duffer shared his own, "It's more like taking what we've done and then amping it up, like what [James] Cameron did from Aliens to Aliens. That's how we see this season."
Considering that the fifth season ends the long-running series, the finale might just be as fun for new and old fans as they are likely to spot numerous references to earlier episodes, especially when the gang faces the monsters they were once too small to defeat on their own.
All the Monsters Stranger Things Has Shown Over Time

Before Vecna came into the picture, his creatures terrorized the people of Hawkins, and to count them all, there have been seven monsters shown since the first season of Stranger Things, namely:
- The Demogorgon - The first horror from the Upside Down seen in Hawkins in season 1. The humanoid creature whose head is shaped like a flower that hides its sharp teeth beneath its skin.
- The Mind Flayer - The huge tentacled shadow monster that haunted and controlled Will Byers as the central plot point in season 2.
- The Spider Monster - As the name implies, it's a fleshy and spider-shaped giant created to act as the physical body of the Mind Flayer that's been trapped in Hawkins after the gate to the Upside Down closed.
- Demodogs - Another Demogorgon species that is not fully grown. The once lizard-sized "pet" whom Dustin called Dart before it grew into a dog-sized monster that somehow grew familiar with the kid who raised him in his home.
- The Vines - A hybrid of plants and animals that binds and tangles up things, including unsuspecting people that they take in as victims. They can only ever be destroyed through fire.
- Demobats - Another species from the Demo monsters. As shown in season 4, they may be small, but these bat-like creatures can strangle, swarm, attack, and bite their victims to death. They also happen to be one of Vecna's many spies in the show.
- Vecna - The mastermind of it all, Vecna, aka Henry Creel, is a human who transformed into the monster that controls everything in the Upside Down. He also happens to be the first supernatural child whom the government experimented on in the Hawkins Lab, similarly to how Eleven endured her childhood years.
