Iconic YouTuber Markiplier has recently expressed interest in generative AI — and fans aren’t having it.
With 35 million subscribers riding on his back, Markiplier (Mark Fischback) is receiving criticism for seemingly showing his support towards the controversial tool.
Not to mention, his personal takes on using ChatGPT, using an AI-generated photo as a thumbnail for his content, and Reddit moderation policies.
Does Markiplier Truly Support Generative AI?
Well, the avid gamer-content creator wasn’t about to sit back and let these commentaries get the best of him. So, in a recent livestream titled Markiplier vs AI: FIGHT NIGHT, he addressed his previous commentaries on generative AI.
“There are reasons to be critical of [AI] the way that it currently is,” he said, “It’s a problem when used without safeguards or proper oversight.”

However, he clarified his stance on the overview of AI in a recent livestream video he hosted by saying, “I’m vehemently against the way generative AI is being used without safeguards.”
“There isn’t this need to be so scared of [AI], but there is a need to be aware of what you’re afraid of,” he explained.
Markiplier, who is best known for his comedic gaming livestreams, faced allegations and managed to address them in the same livestream.
Are the AI-Related Allegations Against Him True?
Let’s break it down a bit: from the AI thumbnail to the Reddit moderator, warts and all.
According to Markiplier, the thumbnail used for one of his videos was originally purchased as a stock photo, meaning the editor didn’t realize that the photo in question was AI-generated in the first place.
Markiplier criticized the stock platform for “burying actual photos in favor of generated slop.”
The image in question is his thumbnail for his Dead Space 3 playthrough, where fans noticed the letter A and S seemed off-putting. Surely enough, they were right.

His subreddit, called The Markiplier Community, banned discussions regarding AI, which drove fans to question his motives.
He then revealed that many of his moderators had received threats during heated debates, thus removing related posts to keep it from happening again.
It is also worth mentioning that his subreddit explicitly prohibits AI-generated posting.
Ultimately, he reiterated his point when it comes to creativity, “There’s still value in pursuing artistic endeavors. There always will be as long as we’re human.”
