He may have played a lot of truly memorable characters but Matt Smith has not yet portrayed a comic book character. But that's about to change as The Crown actor has joined the cast of Sony's Morbius. Interestingly, Smith credits his former Doctor Who co-star Karen Gillan for convincing him to work on the Jared Leto film.
Smith recently spoke to LA Times about Morbius. Although the Patient Zero star wouldn't reveal any details about his character, he did admit that the Avengers: Endgame actress was one of the reasons why he agreed to work on a comic book movie.
"Karen's amazing," Smith said. "She's going to end up ruling the world. I can't tell you her exact advice to me — I'd have to kill you. But she told me that she really likes it, making those movies. That was enough for me. And that's been my experience so far."
In case you missed it, Gillan has gone from being the Doctor's companion to being a Marvel Cinematic Universe star. Needless to say, her advice worked for Smith, who also praised Morbius director Daniel Espinosa. Smith confessed that Espinosa is the other reason why he chose to do the upcoming Sony film.
"I really like the director, Daniel Espinosa, on [Morbius]. I've kind of waited [comic book movies] out a bit. I nearly did one last year and then I didn't. This one felt right because of him," he said.
We're certainly looking forward to seeing Smith in action in Morbius, especially now that he has somehow stated that he isn't in Star Wars: Episode IX. Nevertheless, there is little doubt that we'll be seeing a lot of Smith in the future.
Morbius is scheduled for release on July 31, 2020.
