In this version, Tris won’t choose Dauntless as her faction, which will radically change her path throughout the story and determine where she eventually ends up.
To recap, the social order in the original series is divided into five factions, each based on a person’s personality and skills when reaching the age of 16.
However, unlike others, Tris is a “divergent” who possesses qualities from multiple factions and doesn’t fit into just one of them.
As the “factionless” are considered to occupy the lowest rung of society, Tris is warned not to reveal her true status.
She initially chooses to join the selfless givers known as Abnegation but later transfers to Dauntless, the faction of daring protectors.
Meanwhile, the intellectuals of Erudite plot to control society and eliminate those who don’t fit their mold. In response, Tris and her allies lead a rebellion against various groups and organizations to create a society that doesn’t discriminate against people based on their genetic purity.
But in the third book, Tris dies while attempting to stop a poison gas attack orchestrated by David, the head of the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, which created the faction system as part of an experiment. Tobias ultimately continues the fight and lives to see society change.
