William Shatner has finally responded to rumors of his character, Captain Kirk, returning to the Star Trek universe following Picard Season 3’s tease.
After Kirk died in Star Trek Generations, the sequel series revealed that his body was canonically being stored at the Daystrom Institute, where classified weapons were also stowed.
As this was the same location where a Soong android body helped bring the previously deceased Data (Brent Spiner) back into the storyline, does this mean Picard was also planting the seeds for Captain Kirk’s Star Trek comeback?
Will William Shatner Return as Captain Kirk in Star Trek: Picard?
William Shatner has finally broken his silence about the claims of Captain Kirk’s return following the Star Trek: Picard tease.
In an official statement posted on X, he revealed his terms for making it happen, including having the right and meaningful story following his iconic character’s demise.
“In order to put a stop to the rumor mill before it starts producing even more fiction than Star Trek ever did, let me say this: If someone came up with a meaningful way to bring Captain Kirk back to life, and gave him something genuinely interesting to do that added to the beauty and spirit of Star Trek, I would be delighted to consider it,” he wrote.
However, despite the ongoing rumors of his return, nothing has come to fruition yet.
“But that has never come up,” he continued.
Having been part of the franchise for 28 years, from his debut in the 1966 Star Trek: The Original Series to his death in the 1994 movie Star Trek Generations, Shatner expressed his love for it “as much as” all of the fans.
“Kirk has been an extraordinary part of my life, and I would rather never want to bring him back simply for the sake of bringing him back,” he added.
But “until someone comes knocking with an idea worthy of Kirk,” the now-95-year-old actor said he would continuously “wait. For them. Or for eternity” for it to happen.
Is Captain Kirk Still Alive in the Star Trek Universe?
Sure, Captain Kirk died on the planet Veridian III, but his body remained at Daystrom Station. So, does this mean he is still alive in the Star Trek universe?
According to Star Trek: Picard showrunner Terry Matalas, he put Kirk’s body in storage because he was dissatisfied with how the character’s story ended.
“Look, it’s not how I would have sent Kirk off, clearly because I just put his body in Daystrom,” he said.
Kirk fell from a collapsing metal bridge/scaffolding structure during a fight to stop the villainous El-Aurian scientist Tolian Soran (Malcolm McDowell).
Witnessing his passing, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) was by his side and later buried him on the planet.
But with Picard’s revelation, Section 31 recovered his body and stored it in stasis at the Daystrom Institute.
“Look, Kirk is dead,” Matalas confirmed. “We figured, ‘Is his body really just under a pile of rocks on that planet?’ We’re not committed… we’re not saying he is resurrected.”
William Shatner himself responded to the revelation of Kirk’s return to Picard, likening it to the “old game of Rock, Paper, Scissors.”
“I guess we know where the disappearing @StarTrek Captain went! It’s like the old game of Rock, Paper, Scissors but it’s now Rock, Panel, Station! #ProjectPhoenix? #WhereisKirk? I guess it’s all an @AprilFools,” he wrote on X.
For now, Kirk remains dead in canon, but his preserved body leaves the door open for a potential return
