With the new film A Complete Unknown now out, one of the burning questions that audiences have is whether Bob Dylan gave approval to the script during the making of the film.

The new biopic explored Dylan's earlier years of his career leading up to this iconic performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Timothee Chalamet plays the iconic artist.

Did Bob Dylan Give Approval to A Complete Unknown Script?

In a recent interview, A Complete Unknown producer Peter Jaysen shared that Dylan went through the script with director James Mangold and gave notes while preparing for the film.

By the end of the session, Dylan gave his approval to the script and told Mangold to "go with God."

"He met with Jim Mangold multiple times. At one point they sat there and they read the entire script out loud, with Jim Mangold reading every part and stage direction, and Bob Dylan only reading lines of dialogue for himself," Jaysen revealed.

"Through that process, [Dylan] sat there writing notes on the script. At the end of the last session with Jim Mangold, he signed the script and said, ‘Go with God.'"

While Dylan does not have a say in the final cut of the film, his involvement was regarded to be significant nonetheless.

What Does Bob Dylan Think of A Complete Unknown?

While Dylan has not seen the film, he gave a public endorsement to the film in a recent social media post.

He also praised Chalamet as a "brilliant actor" and expressed his belief that he is "completely believable" in his portrayal of him.

"There’s a movie about me opening soon called A Complete Unknown (what a title!). Timothee Chalamet is starring in the lead role. Timmy’s a brilliant actor so I’m sure he’s going to be completely believable as me. Or a younger me. Or some other me," Dylan wrote in his post.

"The film’s taken from Elijah Wald’s Dylan Goes Electric – a book that came out in 2015. It’s a fantastic retelling of events from the early ‘60s that led up to the fiasco at Newport. After you’ve seen the movie read the book."

It is rare for Dylan to discuss or endorse films and documentaries that were made about him so fans found it completely surprising to see him make such complimentary remarks to A Complete Unknown.
