The writers of Deadpool & Wolverine recently revealed that Robert Downey Jr. almost made a cameo appearance as Tony Stark in the movie.
The MCU film notably brought back several of the actors from past Marvel movies ranging from Wesley Snipes' Blade to Chris Evans' Johnny Storm. Their comeback was well-received by fans who watched in theaters.
Jon Favreau, who has been a recurring player in the MCU as Happy Hogan and directed the first two Iron Man films, also showed up at the beginning of the film. As it turns out, there was another MCU vet that was considered to appear.
Robert Downey Jr. Almost Returned as Tony Stark in Deadpool & Wolverine
In a recent interview, Deadpool & Wolverine co-writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese confirmed that Downey almost made a cameo appearance in the film as Tony Stark.
The Oscar winner was supposed to appear together with Favreau in the scene at the beginning when Deadpool was trying to join the Avengers.
"We had wanted him to do a cameo. We had written that scene [to start] with Happy and Downey," Wernick shared.
Reese added, "Ryan Reynolds read the scene with both of them, so in the hopes we could get Downey. But he also wanted Favreau, because they’re a great combo, and they were all in the scene together."
However, during that time, Reynolds and the writers were not aware that Downey was already talking with Marvel Studios about his MCU return.
"Behind the scenes, we didn’t know about the Doctor Doom. And there’s no way he was going to do both," Wernick explained.
"And then we said, 'Oh, Downey doesn’t say ‘no’ to Ryan Reynolds, does he? No one says no to Ryan Reynolds.' And Ryan gave him the hard press. We wrote scenes, and Downey read the scenes, but what we didn’t know behind the scenes was this Doctor Doom thing."
While it would have been great to see Downey return as Tony Stark for a brief moment in the film, everything still worked out for the best since we got Favreau to represent the MCU, and having Downey be part of the scene might have been too distracting.
It could have also added more confusion on Downey's upcoming return as Doctor Doom if they bring him back as Tony Stark at this time closer to his villainous turn. In the end, fans still won as they got the best of both worlds.
Deadpool & Wolverine is showing in theaters everywhere.
