David Tennant recently criticized J.K. Rowling's controversial views on the rights of the transgender community.
The Harry Potter author, who is notoriously an anti-trans advocate, is back in the headlines in the last few weeks as she celebrated the recent court ruling in the UK regarding the definition of "women."
David Tennant Stands Up Against J.K. Rowling's Controversial Views
As reported by The Guardian, Tennant recently weighed in on Rowling's views regarding transgender rights after he was asked by a group of neurodivergent individuals in The Assembly.
As most fans may already know, he previously starred as Barty Crouch Jr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
"J.K. Rowling is a wonderful author who’s created brilliant stories, and I wish her no ill will, but I hope that we can all as a society, just let people be. Just get out of people’s way," the former Doctor Who star said.
Tennant went on to compare the treatment of the transgender community today to the UK government's 1988 policy that prohibited local authorities from promoting homosexuality.
"We look back on that now as a medieval, absurd thing to try and say, and I think the way the transgender community is being demonised and othered is exactly the same. It’s become this kind of political football," he added.
Tennant is not the only star who has recently criticized Rowling's views about the transgender community. The author was also called out by Nicola Coughlan in her social media post.
The Backlash Against J.K. Rowling
Rowling has been receiving a lot of backlash for the last few years over her anti-trans views.
As a result, the main trio stars of Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint) have expressed their support for the trans community and condemned Rowling's stance on the trans community.
"To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you," Radcliffe wrote in an essay for the Trevor Project.
Despite her controversial views, Rowling remains active in the industry as she is currently involved in the development of HBO's Harry Potter series.
